FAQs

Common questions about personal trainer courses in Australia — qualifications, study, entry requirements, and how to get started with AIF.

What qualification do I need to become a personal trainer in Australia?
To work as a Personal Trainer in Australia, you need a minimum of a SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness. Most gyms and fitness facilities also require you to hold a current SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness. AIF's Master Personal Trainer Program combines both qualifications in a single enrolment — the most efficient pathway to becoming a PT.
What is the difference between Certificate III and Certificate IV in Fitness?
The Certificate III in Fitness qualifies you to work as a Gym Instructor or Group Fitness Instructor — you can lead classes and support members on the gym floor, but cannot work one-on-one as a Personal Trainer. The Certificate IV in Fitness is the qualification required to work as a Personal Trainer, designing and delivering personalised programs for individual clients. Certificate III must be completed before Certificate IV.
What is the Master Personal Trainer Program?
AIF's Master Personal Trainer Program is a single enrolment that covers both the SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness and the SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness — plus exclusive CEC courses, graduate resources, and dedicated career support. It's AIF's most popular fitness qualification and the most efficient way to become a fully qualified Personal Trainer in Australia.
Can I study a personal trainer course online in Australia?
Yes. AIF's fitness qualifications are delivered online with flexible, self-paced study — so you can fit learning around work, family, and other commitments. Practical assessments are completed at a gym near you with a mentor, with no campus requirements. You do not need to attend an AIF campus to complete your fitness qualification.
How long does it take to become a personal trainer?
The time it takes depends on the qualification and your study pace. AIF's Certificate III in Fitness allows up to 12 months access. The Certificate IV in Fitness also allows up to 12 months. The Master Personal Trainer Program (combining both) allows up to 24 months access. Many students complete their qualification faster by studying consistently. Speak with the Careers Team to understand realistic timeframes based on your availability.
What are the entry requirements for AIF fitness courses?
AIF assesses all applicants through an eligibility process. You'll need computer and internet access, a passion for fitness and helping people, and must meet AIF's language, literacy, and numeracy requirements. There is no minimum age requirement for the fitness qualifications, but you must meet AIF's acceptance criteria before enrolment is confirmed.
What is the Master PT & Nutritionist Program?
The Master PT & Nutritionist Program combines the full Master Personal Trainer Program (Certificate III + IV in Fitness) with the 11046NAT Master Nutritionist Program — giving you both a fitness and nutrition qualification in a single enrolment. It's ideal for fitness professionals who want to coach clients on both training and nutrition, and build a more comprehensive coaching business.
How do I find out about fees and payment options?
Fees, payment plans, and scholarship options vary by program. The best way to get accurate, up-to-date pricing is to speak directly with the AIF Careers Team or download the course guide. AIF offers flexible payment options to help make your qualification accessible — ask the Careers Team about what's available for your chosen course.
Does AIF help with career support after graduation?
Yes. AIF provides career guidance, industry connections, and graduate resources designed to help you understand employment and business pathways after completing your qualification — whether you want to work in a gym, go freelance, build an online coaching business, or open your own studio.
